Project 2025 Social Security Retirement Age. The heritage foundation and some republican lawmakers have previously advocated an increase to the social security retirement age but even that proposal is not mentioned in the project. The earnings exempt from the retirement earnings test is now $23,400 per year in 2025 for those under full retirement age, up from $22,320 per year in 2024.
While some benefits are available at age 62, the full retirement age is 66 or 67, depending on one’s date of birth (archived here and here). To restore social security’s intent, policymakers should gradually increase the normal retirement age from 67 to 69 or 70—moving the age up by one or two months per year—and index it to life.
